This Is Not a Cleaning Campaign

If you think of 5S as "a big cleaning," you will definitely fail. 5S is a management technique that makes waste visible. When items are in their proper place, you can see when something is missing, and when the floor is clean, you can spot oil leaks.

5 Steps

1S Organization	Seiri (整理)	Discard what is not needed	"Is this really needed?"
2S Neatness	Seiton (整頓)	Put what is needed in its place	"Can I find it within 30 seconds?"
3S Cleaning	Seiso (清掃)	Inspect while cleaning	"Why did it get dirty?"
4S Cleanliness	Seiketsu (清潔)	Maintain the 1~3S condition	"Is there a standard?"
5S Discipline	Shitsuke (躾)	Make it a habit	"Will you do it without being told?"

Order is important. If you try to organize (neatness) without first discarding unnecessary items, you end up neatly arranging useless things.

Real Effects of 5S

3S Comes First

Trying to do all 5 at once leads to failure. First, establish 3S: Organization → Neatness → Cleaning, and then Cleanliness and Discipline will naturally follow.

Common Reasons for Failure

Failure Pattern	Why It Fails
Treated as an event	Only cleaned the day before the boss visits → returns to the original state the next day
Fails to discard	"Maybe I'll need it someday" → warehouse becomes a garbage dump
No on-site participation	Managers give orders, but on-site workers just pretend
No standards	Each person has a different standard for "organized"
No time allocated	Production takes priority, leaving no time for 5S → Even 15 minutes per week should be scheduled as regular time

What New Hires Should Do in the First Week

Identify items not used at all in a week from your workstation
Place frequently used tools in easily accessible places
Make 5 minutes of cleanup before leaving a habit
Report any abnormalities (leaks, cracks) found during cleaning

> New hires have an advantage in 5S. Longtime employees become accustomed to the messy state and don't notice it. What looks strange to a new person is truly strange. Don't hesitate to speak up.
